So last night during my duty staff shift I was sitting with several other staff and they started talking about the inclusivity/diversity and human rights session we had during training. Apparently, they got nothing out of it aside from a need to complain about having to think about what other people’s perceptions might be. They also seem to enjoy ignoring all of the ways that they have privilege and the whole idea of systemic oppression, which they pretty much think doesn’t exist. “I, as a caucasian male, am born equal to a male person of colour of the same age.” —- Uhm, no, actually, the whole idea of systemic oppression is that you are not the sole perpetrator, its the whole system. Socially, you have more privileges than that person of colour and it’s not your fault that the privilege exists. It’s our fault as a whole society. If we all keep denying that the system isn’t oppressive then we can’t make it change and we’re just working with it and continuing oppression.
They were also extremely focused on defending why they should be allowed to say whatever they want because “freedom of speech”. Well, grow a bigger vocabulary, because there are a million words out there and you’ll actually look a lot smarter if you start using alternatives.
Not that these people aren’t inclusive for the most part, but they were just being really trash talky about the presentation, and you know what, at least this lady was trying to get you to think about what words actually mean to different people!!
UGH I was so peeved, and I was going to try to explain my point of view, but a) I suck at being articulate and b) they didn’t even stop talking long enough for me to have a chance to start. I need to have someone articulate read my mind, sort everything out, and be my mouth for me!
This has been a rant. Goodbye.
So my first duty shift is tonight; aka rounds in South res… this should be interesting, to say the least. Wishing myself luck!
Just caught up on Pretty Little Liars and wow, this show alternately pisses me off because of all the lies and drags me in because of all the drama of them.
